Reid was involved in the field of education for thirty-seven years. All of those years of service were done in the Carbondale community. He began as a teacher and coach in 1953. In 1963 he became the athletic director and served in that capacity until 1976. In 1976 until his retirement in 1990, he served as the superintendent of schools. Reid was involved at the original athletic directors association meeting in 1965. Reid is credited with organizing the Southern Illinois athletic directors to become involved in the state association during the early years of the association. Reid also served as vice-president the first three-years of the organization. He was president of the association in 1968-69. During his tenure as president of the IADA representative on the IHSA basketball advisory committee. Throughout his educational career he served as an active participant and many times and officer in numerous local, sate, and national organizations while employed at Carbondale.
